The kitsune or nine-tailed fox is a spirit common in Japanese folklore. Kitsune are "legendary foxes... intelligent beings... possessing paranormal abilities" such as shapeshifting.

You can learn how to draw a nine-tailed fox with the help of this mythological drawing tutorial.

According to legend, kitsune foxes can take on human form once they reach the age of 50 or 100. They can be identified by their fox-shaped shadow or their tales, which they maintain as humans.

They are also very afraid of dogs. They may be loyal companions or wily tricksters. The more tails they have, the older and wiser they are.

Sketches and paintings of these mythical foxes have been common for centuries in China and throughout East Asia.

They also appear in anime and manga stories. Perhaps the most familiar nine-tailed fox is the character Ninetails from the Pokémon franchise. Ninetails is the evolved form of the puppy-like Vulpix.

Are you ready to make a foxy drawing? How old and wise is your kitsune - how many tails does he sport?

1. Begin by outlining the fox's ears and eyes. Use a pair of curved lines to enclose the shadowy shapes of the inner ears, which extend to form patches around the eyes.

Allow the lines to meet at points at the end. Shade the lobed shapes, leaving only the whites of the eyes. Complete the ears by drawing lines from the top of the head to the tips. Then, detail the crown of the head and the furrowed brow with short lines.

2. Use a series of short, curved lines that meet at jagged points to enclose the fur along the fox's cheeks. Connect these with a curved line, outlining the muzzle. Use curved lines to draw the neck above the ears and trace the open mouth.

Draw triangles within the mouth to indicate the teeth. Shade the irregularly shaped nose above the mouth. Finally, detail the base of the ears and the top of the nose with short lines.
